Shorts: Gym Code

Part of the shorts series. Shorts are short one off stories done by request of the person generally in the story. Meaning, they will be self contained even if they have characters from other stories. Good for when you are looking for a quick fight that won't hurt your eyes reading for a long time

The gym wasn’t fancy. Hell, it barely qualified as a building.

Four battered cinder block walls held together a space that felt more like a furnace than a fitness center. Heat hung in the air like a wet sheet, wrapping every man in its suffocating grip. The windows, if you could call those slits near the ceiling windows, didn’t let in light so much as they carved the sun into jagged shafts that stabbed through the haze of chalk dust and sweat. The whole place stank of testosterone and history, like pain had soaked into the walls and never quite left. The floor was cracked concrete, permanently stained with years of blood, grit, spit, and whatever pride a man left behind when he failed a set. Equipment leaned against the walls like forgotten soldiers: rust-bitten dumbbells, medicine balls splitting at the seams, jump ropes with frayed handles, heavy bags hung on chains that squealed in protest when struck. The squat racks were uneven. The benches wobbled if you breathed wrong. The mirrors, where they weren’t shattered, were fogged and streaked, useless for vanity. There was no air conditioning. Just a pair of ceiling fans older than most of the guys inside, spinning lazily, barely moving the humid, body sour air. A speaker hung from a frayed wire in the corner, held in place by duct tape and hope, crackling out classic rock or silence, depending on the day.

And yet, despite the heat, the grime, the danger of tetanus, every man in that gym treated it like sacred ground. Like it was more a church than workout center. This was where egos were tested and often broken, where muscle met pain in ritual sacrifice, and where pride didn’t walk out, it limped, dripping sweat and sometimes blood. No contracts bound anyone here. No memberships or stupid cute cards to scan. No rules anyone cared to enforce. Just sweat, scars, and the quiet respect of knowing you stepped into the one place that didn’t care who you were, only what you could take. Among the scattered bodies moving through their own brutal routines, tucked between the heavy bags and the squat racks, stood two of the most watched men in the room. Not because they were the loudest. Not even because they were the strongest. But because when these two locked eyes, everyone knew the air was about to get even thicker.

Christmas Story (3)

Series: Stories series. Like shorts, these are generally done by request and have some personification of the requester in the story.  Unlike shorts, these are longer (6k+ words) and move descriptive and world building.

Christmas Eve came quietly this year, as it had for some years now. Not saying that's a bad thing mind you, after 360 some days of going nuts, screaming, yelling, working your ass off, some quite time would always be welcome. No kids screaming at the top of their lungs. No chaos of having to go outside with people. No last-minute scrambling for this or for that. Yeah, definitely a good thing. Peaceful and relaxing. Just steady snowfall and the low hum of a house that had been lived in for some time now, the one they had been sharing for so many years it no longer felt like something either of them had ever moved into. It simply existed, like it had always been theirs. The snow wasn’t loud or dramatic either. It didn’t swirl or howl. It fell gently, steadily, the kind that softened edges and muted the world. The kind that made everything feel wrapped up tight, like that ugly Christmas sweater Cody refused to get rid of no matter how many times Evan threatened it.

The only real difference this year? The yard somehow looked smaller than it used to? Maybe it wasn’t the yard at all? Maybe they were just bigger now. They were older, sure. Their thirties had settled into them comfortably, without hurry or regret. But they were broader, heavier in a way that spoke of years spent lifting, working, living. Their bodies carried muscle that hadn’t been rushed or faked, this was real muscled, muscle earned slowly, deliberately, layered over time. They were also worn in. In all the best ways. Cody stepped outside first, boots crunching softly in the snow. The ugly Christmas sweater stretched tight across a body that had only grown denser with the years. Not showy. Not sculpted for mirrors. Just solid and manly as hell. According to Evan. his man, yeah, he was still thick. Still undeniably bear-strong. Man-strong. His shoulders filled the doorway. His chest pressed against the knit fabric. His stomach, still powerful, still legendary, sat beneath it, broader now, built for endurance instead of flash. His hands were bigger too, rougher, the knuckles carrying faint reminders of old gym nights and long workdays. The beard was fuller than it used to be. Dark still, but dusted with gray now, just enough to catch if you knew where to look. Just enough to make Evan smile every time he noticed a new streak. Something about Cody again like fine wine really did it for Evan... and Evan wouldn’t have it any other way.

Speaking of Evan...

Evan followed him outside a moment later, tugging his hoodie tighter around his thicker frame. He wasn’t the lean kid he once been, hell no, not even close. His shoulders had broadened to match Cody’s. His arms filled out sleeves without effort. His stance carried quiet confidence now, grounded and sure. The boy had become a man, and he really grew into himself. Cody had seen every inch of that growth, the years of work, the setbacks, the determination, the slow realization that he didn’t have to chase anyone anymore. That alone was a turn on, but the muscled body that could rip logs in half? That helped...

They stood there together in the snow, breath fogging, the house warm and glowing behind them. No words needed yet. Just the quiet understanding that some traditions didn’t fade with age, not that they would want it too...

Anwar had always been about doing the right thing, even when it hurt. Ok, especially when it hurt. As a boy in Cairo, he never tolerated bullies, never liked it when the bigger meaner people picked on the weaker ones. He would fight for what was right, and would fight for them. Of course, that usually meant he was the one walking home with a bloody nose, a split lip, and a stubborn smile that said he had do it all again tomorrow. His attitude was kind, but definitely of a young man who would never learn a lesson. No was just a suggestion to him, especially when it came to protecting others. Teachers told him to keep his head down, that he didn't want this drama. His mother, bless her, begged him to stop getting into fights. Just go to school, do your work, and cause no trouble. His father? Never said much, but there was silent approval in what his boy was doing. In that never give up attitude. Yet, no matter what many other people said, something in him couldn’t just stand by when someone weaker was being pushed around.

That something, what ever it was, never faded.

In any male social circle, whether it's among office workers, bar buddies, gym rats, or late-night gaming squads, there’s always a kind of unspoken hierarchy. It doesn’t have to be macho or alpha-driven, or about blood sweat and muscle. Sometimes it’s about skill, like who pulls the most clutch wins in War-zone or who leads the raid party with the cleanest strategy. Sometimes it's even about who knows the most obscure movie quotes or who can fix a broken graphics card in five minutes flat. But no matter what metric it's built on, there’s a pecking order. One guy always ends up being the “top dog” and the others fall into place beneath, either content or quietly competing.

It's just a male thing.

Yet from time to time, that order gets... lets say blurry. Someone challenges the established setup, intentionally or not. Ego gets bruised. Tensions brew. And when logic and banter stop working, some guys feel the need to settle things in more... physical ways.

That’s exactly how this bizarre little showdown started.

Two of the smartest, quick thinking, nerdiest dudes in their circle. Both legendary in their gaming community. Both proud of their strategic minds and lightning thumbs. But only one could be top nerd. Only one could have the right to rule over them all. So, naturally when all else failed, they ditched the keyboards and controllers... and settled it with their fists. Or at least they tried to. Neither had much muscle, or muscle at all. Neither had a history of violence, in real life combat, or the ability to properly throw a punch. But that didn't matter, when two males made up their minds, brains took a back seat.

And the Great Nerd Fight began.

The basement was cramped, the carpet thin and worn, and the only light came from a flickering overhead bulb, but to these two, it may as well have been an arena. Without a word, both men pulled off their shirts. They had seen enough action movies to know that real fights didn’t happen fully clothed. There was something about bare chests, no matter how skinny or underwhelming, that made it feel official. Primal. Ritualistic, even.

First was Tae-hyun. He was lean, smooth-skinned, not a trace of body hair on his chest or arms, not from shaving, like some men did to show off definition, but simply because there was none to begin with. Genetics had gifted him a clean canvas. Born in South Korea, he carried himself with a subtle precision, controlled, careful, always composed, even now. Tae-hyun adjusted the frame of his shoulders, the overhead light catching on the slight sheen of sweat forming along his collarbone. He thought about tugging off his glasses but then decided against it. He wanted to see after all.

He was ready.

His opponent in this battle would be Faisal. Faisal stepped forward with quiet confidence, his wiry frame betraying none of the certainty in his stride. Unlike his smooth skinned friend, Faisal’s body was coated in a thick layer of hair. His chest, arms, even the tops of his shoulders were all covered, giving him a rugged look that clashed with his lack of muscle. But Faisal didn’t rely on strength. He didn’t need to. His power came from his mind. An expert in strategy games, chess, StarCraft, war sims, he prided himself on thinking five moves ahead. He had beaten guys twice his size by knowing exactly when to bait, when to feint, and when to strike. Well online at least... but he was ready.

AI Fun: 1

Ben and James had been together for what seemed like forever. Grade school? High school? No one could remember really. They where the kind of couple people either admired or side-eyed with disbelief, two strong, stubborn bulls who somehow made it work. They’d lived through every argument, every reconciliation, every scraped knee from camping trips and every bruised ego after friendly competition. And through it all, they’d stuck like epoxy: rough around the edges, but solid in the core. They weren’t soft-spoken romantics. No, they were man’s men. They didn’t write poems, they wrote each other gym routines. Their idea of a getaway was a cabin with no signal and heavy logs to split. Their bodies reflected that too, solid muscle, earned not for show, but forged through sweat, blood, and stubbornness. And they loved every inch of each other’s effort. One of their favorite rituals, and time spent together,  was their shared home gym in the basement. Simple setup: some free weights, a battered punching bag, a wall mirror that had survived two floods, and the centerpiece, a thick wooden ceiling beam, scarred from years of use and perfect for pull-ups, stretches, or in Ben’s case today… push-ups. The old-school kind. Hanging from the beam, back arched, core tight, going up and down with perfect form as sweat rolled down his torso. James, across the room, was mid-arm set, but he wasn’t fooling anyone. His biceps burned, but it was nothing compared to the heat pooling in his gut from watching Ben move. The rhythmic motion of those lats and abs. The raw power in every controlled dip. The sheer effort, the pride… and the goddamn tease. Ben looked over, lips curled slightly, a smug glint in his eyes. He knew James was watching. He wanted him to.

That was half the fun.

James put down his dumbbells with a thud and grabbed his towel, but didn’t wipe off. He stood there for a second, arms crossed, his chest still heaving slightly. His gaze dropped again to those abs, flexing with each breath. His fists clenched. Part of him wanted to throw a jab right into that perfect wall of muscle, test its strength, feel it resist. The other part of him? The other part wanted to get on his knees and kiss each tight ridge of it until Ben dropped down and pinned him to the floor.

But this was still workout time. Fun could come later.

Ben kept up the rhythm, push-up, hold, release, his fingers wrapped in a white-knuckled grip around the low beam overhead. His body hung in controlled suspension, every muscle drawn tight like cable wire. His core flexed with each motion, abs bunching into clean, brutal lines that caught the soft basement light and turned it molten across his skin. Each dip pulled his torso long, lean muscle stretched taut. Each rise brought his abs back into focus, hard, defined, gleaming like armor. His breath came slow and even, controlled, as if the effort cost him nothing. But sweat still clung to him, running in slow trails down his ribs, gliding over his stomach. James stood a few feet away, towel slack around his neck slowly falling off, hitting the floor, forgotten. His chest rose with each inhale, slower now, deeper. There was heat behind his eyes, curiosity, admiration, hunger. His lips parted slightly, as if caught on the verge of a question or a confession.

But he said nothing.

The silence between them pulsed.

Ben kept going. Push. Hold. Flex.

And James couldn’t look away.

His legs moved without instruction, slow steps closing the space between them like a tide. Deliberate. Hesitant. Wanting. The low ceiling and exposed pipes gave the room a cramped intimacy, the kind that buzzed beneath the skin. He stopped just close enough to feel the heat rolling off Ben’s body. Ben didn’t stop. Didn’t even glance at him. But his jaw was clenched a little tighter. His breath just slightly uneven now. James stood there, eyes locked on the cut of Ben’s stomach. That ridged, glistening core, working like a machine beneath thin, flushed skin. He could smell the sweat. So clean, so sharp, so human. He could hear the faint grunt in Ben’s throat when he dipped just a bit lower than necessary.

Something unspoken snapped taut between them.

And James reached out. His hand moved gently, not timid, but reverent. Fingers brushed the firm rise of Ben’s abs, light at first, then pressing slightly. Feeling the heat, the tension, the living hardness beneath. Ben didn’t flinch. He held his position, suspended, unmoving, but his eyes cut down, catching James with something unreadable in his expression. Neither of them said a word. But both of them knew what this was.

What it could become.

What it was about to become.

Thread Title: Any guys in my area into gut work? (Late 30s here)

u/Fit4Life98:
Been lurking here for a while. Finally figured I’d throw this out, take a chance right? Whatever, I'm in my late 30s, decent shape, light hair on chest/abs, always wondered how far my stomach could go. Not looking for anything wild, maybe? Maybe I want more, see how it's like. I really just want to see what my core can actually take when someone’s really testing it. Gloves, bare fists, whatever.

u/BodyShotsFinalBoss:
Same here bro. I'm in my late 30s too, but I’m on the other side of it. I love sinking shots into a tight midsection and watching the hits land. Big, built, and been lifting and boxing most of my life. You sound like you’d be a good challenge. We should have a go.

u/Fit4Life98:
Challenge accepted?
I’ve trained abs for years, but never really had someone go at me without holding back. Curious if I’m as tough as I think...or if I’ll fold fast.

u/BodyShotsFinalBoss:
Sounds like bro wants to talk trash already. Good. I like that. Tell you what, if we meet, I’ll go steady at first. Let the gloves, let my fists do the talking. Then we’ll see how many rounds you can actually take.

u/Fit4Life98:
You’re already making it sound like a fight night. I’m not gonna back down though.
Where you based?

u/Fit4Life98:
Downtown side of the city. Got a private space I train at, mats, gloves, no distractions. If you’re close, we can set it up.

u/BodyShotsFinalBoss:
I’m across town. Not far. I can make the drive.
So really good with straight gut shots, see how far I can go?

u/BodyShotsFinalBoss:
So good bro. You stand, you take. I punch, I watch. You tap when you’ve had enough, or you don’t.
Sound good?

u/Fit4Life98:
Sounds more than good. Let’s do it.

... And that's all it took.

Vince was new to the gym.

Not new to gyms, he clearly spent plenty of time in them. But this one? He was definitively the new guy and the lowest on the totem-pole. Despite this, and from the moment he walked in, everyone could see the difference from the average Joe or seasoned fighter. Sure, he came in looking good. He was lean muscled, sculpted like a statue, and had the kind of definition you only get from hours of treadmills, weights, and mirrors. But, in a way, that was the problem. Vince here looked great, but he didn’t look like a fighter. No, kid looked like a pretty pretty princess poster. Everything about him screamed show over substance. Likes and subscribing over form and trails. His warmups looked less like drills and more like a performance. Instagram staged, rehearsed, like he was filming content for followers instead of preparing for combat. He flexed between sets but only when someone was looking, adjusted the lighting when he thought it was even slightly off, and angled his phone just right to catch his best side. Where the other men ended their sessions plunging sore muscles into ice baths or wrapping joints that ached from decades of work, Vince disappeared into the locker room with a razor. Every trace of body hair had to go. His chest, his arms, even his stomach and legs, stripped smooth as glass. He spent longer shaving than most men did sparring. His body always had to look “on point”.

While all others who entered this gym bore sweat, scared, bruises and more like badges of honor they truly where... Vince checked mirrors between rounds. Bro just absolutely had to make super sure every strand of hair on his head stayed in place. Where men saw sweat and pain as weakness leaving the body, tot a drip of sweat on Vince was allowed to roll where a camera might catch it wrong. Only approved proper sweat was allowed. His guard, when he practiced or did drills, was neat, polished, practiced. But really, that's was all it was. A stance from a boxing video game copied for maximum effect. A pose from an old movie where the star was clearly paid to much. A grunt like he was a 80's action star. Kid moved like a live studio audience was watching, like the damn bell was just a cue for the next scene. It was obvious to everyone: Vince didn’t come here to fight. He came here to be seen. Which was a huge mistake in the long rung. You see, nothing pissed off the veterans, these men who bled and bruised for every inch of ring space, than watching a glossy show pony strut around their gym pretending to be one of them. It was, to keep it brief, bullshit.

Fitness boy belonged on a fitness magazine cover, not inside a ring.

Max’s muscles still throbbed from the last set, heavy bench press, max weight, no spotter. It was the kind of lift where you grit your teeth so hard you feel it in your skull, where your chest feels like it might split open, but you push anyway because stopping isn’t in you. Stopping is what the loser bitches in this gym did. On the bench he stopped for a moment, and took a moment for himself. His pecs still felt carved from granite, every fiber swollen with that hard-earned pump. With a push off he was off to the looker room, no need to clean the machine he just used. The gym had hired idiots for that lowely work. Max, after all, had better things to do. He now stood in front of the locker room mirror, steam drifting around him from the showers in the next row. Outside, rain hammered against the narrow windows, but Max barely heard it over the thrum of his own pulse in his ears. His thick chest hair lay plastered to his pecs, dark and gleaming under the buzzing fluorescent lights. Over and over, in his mind, one thought commanded acknowledgment.

Damn.

I look good.

I look powerful.

I look, I am dangerous.

 [TV News Broadcast Transcript]

"Good evening. One of our own is in the news tonight. A face you know, a voice you’ve trusted! That's right, our very own investigative reporter, Marcus ‘Coach’ Johnson. Viewers have lovingly nicknamed him Coach over the years for his steady, guiding presence and relentless push to get the truth."

"This past week, Coach has been covering a daring and violent robbery that rocked the city. Two men stormed a downtown armored car just after dawn, overwhelming security with pipes and makeshift weapons. More than three million dollars in unmarked bills were stolen, along with several crates of rare, privately held bonds. Three guards were hospitalized, two with broken ribs, one still in critical condition from head trauma. Police have been stretched thin, chasing leads that dry up as quickly as they appear."

"But Coach wouldn’t let it go. Day after day, he tracked the story, speaking with witnesses, piecing together security footage, and connecting dots that others had missed. His latest discovery led him to an unlikely place: the sewers beneath the old rail district. Investigators had dismissed it as a dead end. Coach didn’t agree."

"And last night, following a lead of his own, Marcus ‘Coach’ Johnson was last seen descending into those tunnels. Where it will take him, and what he’ll find down there, we will proudly report tonight! But as I'm sure you already know, if there’s one thing this city can count on, it’s that Coach will follow the truth, no matter how deep it runs."

The twins, Aiden and Evan, were once inseparable. Born minutes apart, they grew up mirroring each other’s every move. Same toys, same sports, same grades, even the same damn haircut until they were seventeen. It was cute when they were kids, people joked they were telepathic, finishing each other’s sentences like some novelty act. But now? Now they were twenty-four, and the sameness that once bonded them was starting to feel like a prison. It wasn’t just that they liked the same music or both preferred their steaks rare. It was deeper, more instinctual. If Aiden started going to the gym at 6 a.m., Evan would show up the next day at 5:45, just to be first. If Evan mentioned a girl, Aiden would find a reason not to like her. It was competition masked as connection, closeness twisted into rivalry.

The shift didn’t come with fireworks either, it was more like a slow burn. Little frictions here and there piling up over days, months and then years. But no one saw the final match being struck. Not even them. All anyone knew was one Sunday afternoon, a shout rang through their parents’ house. Then another. Then came the sound of glass rattling, doors slamming. Their mother tried to intervene, only for both boys to yell in unison, "Stay out of it!" It was chaos. Their father left the room, muttering something about letting them be men and settle it. Whatever the fight was originally about, who took the last protein bar, whose girlfriend had more substance, who was the real reason they both quit college, got lost in the storm of shouting. Every wound, every slight they had swallowed over the years was vomited up in ugly, bitter words. They stormed out. Then came back. The yelling resumed. Someone’s shirt got torn. A chair was flipped. Their mother cried quietly in the kitchen. And finally, they stopped. Standing across from each other in the living room, heaving for breath, fists clenched. The old photo wall framed them perfectly, baby pictures, matching graduation caps, childhood smiles.

Now they stared each other down. The same face, reflected in rage.

The town name wasn't important, rarely was when things hit this close to home. What mattered was the neighborhood, the block, and the two people this story is about. They were two storms, once formed, that never passed peacefully. CelticFire and Diego had lived on the same block their whole lives, but there wasn’t a single memory between them that didn’t end with fists clenched or words sharp enough to cut. It was like they were born to hate each other, and they followed their Karma to the letter. CelticFire was the older of the two, a retired boxer with heavy Irish roots (and he would tell anyone who would listen) and the kind of hands that still twitched whenever he smelled leather and liniment. Old habits die hard, and some never do. His backyard smelled like smoke and meat more often than not, barbecue was his religion now, and neighbors swore he could grill a steak so good it could end wars. Just not the one with Diego, go figure. He carried his pride like an old belt around his waist, faded but still shining when he let his temper loose. Shine might not be a strong enough word, more like... burn. Diego, on the other hand, was somewhat younger, very proud Mexican, and carried himself with a swagger that came from a lifetime in kitchens and a childhood of sparring in neighborhood gyms, and back ally, and street corners, and... well you get the idea. Cooking was his art, his release, and nothing made him prouder (or more filled with joy) than the sound of family and friends tearing into something he made. His food could seriously achieve world peace if given the chance. But under the apron? Under all that charm? There was a man who never let go of the way CelticFire had wronged him. The offense? He had no idea anymore, maybe there wasn't one, and never would be, but he still just didn't like the guy. They were both fire to flint, every single time. Sometimes it was a scuffed-up mailbox. Sometimes it was a trash can tipped over “by accident.” Sometimes it was just the way one of them looked at the other too long. Everyone on the block knew it was coming. The question wasn’t if they’d fight. It was when.

That answer would come late one Friday night.

Ben stood quietly in the back stockroom, the dim overhead bulbs casting long, flickering shadows across the stacked rows of cardboard boxes lining the shelves. It was always cooler back here, nice, still, quiet, a pocket of order tucked away from the day’s noise. He liked that. He’d always liked the calm predictability of it. Everything had its place. Everything made sense. Anyone who ever worked retail would understand.

But today… the air was off.

There was a tension in the room, not loud (yet), not obvious (yet), but definitively present. Subtle and steady, like the low hum of a wire stretched too tight. Ben shifted his stance, arms crossed over his broad chest. He wasn’t bulky in the way of gym rats or athletes, there was no carved six-pack or veiny biceps on display either, but his frame was solid, sturdy. Built like someone who could carry more than his share without complaint.... which he often did. He was above average in size, the kind of man who moved with quiet purpose rather than flash. He wore a dark blue button-down today. Crisp but casual, sleeves rolled neatly to the elbows. His beard was trimmed close, every line clean. A little older than most guys his age would try to look, but Ben had always carried himself like that. More mature. More put-together. But even with all that discipline, he couldn’t shake the feeling coiling in his gut. Something wasn’t right. And whatever it was, it had followed him back here, into his quiet place, and settled in the shadows between the shelves.

That something, came a moment later from around the corner.

Around the corner came James, strutting more than walking of course. That was him after all, young, inexperienced, walked around like he owned the place, even though everyone knew he barely had his foot in the door. James was the kind of guy who always talked too loud, flirted with anyone breathing, and pushed every boundary HR ever laid down. Men, women, it really didn’t matter. He hit on everyone with the same sloppy charm and wink that somehow kept him just on the barely tolerable side of trouble. His shirt was untucked as usual, not to mention the shirt itself looked like it was making a failing effort to look clean, and his hair was a tousled mess that might have been intentional. His beard, patchy and just shy of unkempt, gave him that "I-don’t-care" edge he wore like a badge of honor. He spotted Ben and lit up like a kid who just found someone to pester.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Mr. Always-in-Control!”

The gym reeked of sweat, rubber, and something older, something like... memory and grudges? Not just any grudges mind you, the kind that was settled the old fashion way, with gloving up. Being men. The air was thick with anticipation, the kind that made men shift in their boots and hold their breath without knowing why. Fluorescent lights buzzed above, casting a sickly glow over the old, battered ring, a relic held together more by tradition than wood and steel. It should’ve been replaced decades ago, but no one dared touch it. No one would even dare suggest it be replaced. After all, men got sentimental over the damnedest things, even more so when blood had been spilled on it. All around, the roar of the gym crowd pulsed like a heartbeat. Trainers, fighters, the curious and the excited, they leaned on ropes and railings, eyes fixed on the square stage like it was holy ground. To them, and really any man of worth, it was. But inside that ring, the world narrowed down to just two men. Everything else, the noise, the heat, the sweat, faded into background static.

Jack stood tall in his corner, bare chest rising and falling. His wiry frame was coiled tight, tension rippling through each breath. Lean muscle clung to his bones like it had grown there for this exact moment. Sweat already gathered along his collarbones, trickling down the shallow valley of his sternum. His eyes were wild with something half cockiness, half thrill. He looked like a man who couldn’t help but smile on the edge of a cliff. Across from him stood Kevin. Like always, he was solid, unmoved, a statue waiting to come to life. The green streaks in his hair caught the overhead lights, glowing like war paint. But it was his eyes that did it. Not the color, but the stillness. Calm. Cold. Focused like a storm before the first crack of lightning. Something dangerous simmered behind that quiet stare, the kind of rage that didn’t shout, it waited.

The scene was really so basic American, that it could have taken place in any small city or old town. Kevin was middle-aged, solidly built but really unremarkable and never really standing out personality wise. His hair clung thick to his chest and arms, with his nature themed tattoos covering most of his upper body. He worked, he slept and he did nonsense on the weekends, pretty much like any other single American male. The guy that was next to him on the sofa, watching TV like it meant something, was James. James, also single and not caring, was slightly younger (not that it mattered much in your 40's), taller, and have a build that even a baggy shirt couldn't hide. Lady killer the boys at work called him. James, paid such nicknames no mind. During the day on weekdays, they worked at the local factory. They traded their labor, sweat, blood and youth for pennies on the dollar, and making some stuck up fat cat rich idiot even richer. During the weekends, they hung out a lot, mostly at James’s apartment. Beer, cheap takeout, the TV always on in the background. Not saying much, because they really didn't need to. When one got up for another drink, they grabbed another, for the other. When it was time for a new show, they changed the channel. They knew each other, and what clicked well. It was the kind of friendship and understanding that felt needed after dealing with everything and everyone else during the week.

The two had known each other for years. They trained side by side through countless sessions, pushing each other on the heavy bags, spotting each other in the weight room, trading jabs during sparring rounds, and offering quiet encouragement before real fights. No matter what happened, they had each others back in and outside the ring. Brothers you could call them. Not by blood, but by choice. In the world of boxing, or any fighting sport really, where rivalry could turn bitter, their bond was different. It was built on trust, sweat, and a shared respect for the grind. So when the idea of facing off finally came up, it wasn’t born from ego or any need to prove who was better. It was more like checking in with an old friend, seeing how far they’d both come, testing themselves the way only two people who truly knew each other could. The day it happened, there was no big announcement, no flyers, no hype. Just a mutual nod, it was of quiet understanding. They each laced up their gloves without a word, stepped into the ring, and met in the center, calm, focused, and smiling just a little.

The "official" bell was a timer app running on someone’s cracked phone, resting on a bench outside the ropes. The crowd was whoever happened to be in the gym that day. Some guys mid-set on the bench press, a couple trainers on break shooting the shit over water, a handful of regulars who knew this wasn’t something to miss. No one yelled, they didn't have too. No one called out odds, it wasn't that kind of fight anyways. There was just a low hum of anticipation, knowing it would be a good male time. More importantly, there was no bad blood in the air. Just the heat of the gym, the sound of gloves tightening, and the quiet kind of energy that comes from two men about to share a fight, not to hurt each other, but to honor each other.

When the match was announced, it came as a surprise to no one. Both wielded and flung smack talk easily as any person would breathe. The stage was set, the date had come and now? The crowd was electric, the roar deafening as two bear-like men stood face-to-face in the center of the ring. On one side, Mikey, a powerhouse wrapped in muscle and rage, eyes burning with intensity. Some said his mouth moved faster than his fists. Today he would prove them all wrong. On the other side, Celticfire, full of self pride and a thirst for battle. His thick frame carved by years of battle, fists clenched ready to go, and more bar fights under his belt than should ever be allowed (or legal for that matter).

The bell rang. It. Was. On.

Under the hot lights of a roaring arena in Las Vegas, two warriors stood across the ring, each a symbol of national pride and personal fury. Each at the peak of their game. Each ready for the absolute time of their lives. Sure, there was still the shit talk and playing it up, that was just part of the fanfare. But these two respected each other, and would not dare insult the other by holding back.

The ring would be covered in blood, sweat, and exuberance before it was over.

First came CelticFire, carrying the pride of Dublin on his shoulders. A green haired hurricane with fists of granite and the fire of centuries in his blood. He looked like a drunk at Christmas, joyous and dangerous. His trunks where dark red with black trim, his gloves were stained by past victories. Then came El Yaguareté, moving like his namesake. The look in his eye was fierce, more predator than man. He came from the barrios of Buenos Aires, clawing his way to the top. Like Celtic, he chose a simple form for his ring clothing. No need for unnecessary pampas fluff. They were here to fight, not win a beauty contest.

The bell rang.

The red hot sun blistered the jobsite like a furnace, worse then the dick head Sun from Super Mario Brothers 3. Metal gleamed like white-hot wire. Not even their extremely thick insulation could protect them right now. The dust clung to sweat-soaked skin, and tempers were already at a low boil. Most of the crew had already discarded most of their upper body clothing, deciding to instead just wear the mandatory safety vest.

Jack strutted along the scaffolding, bare chest gleaming under the open safety vest, cocky as hell. Twenty-four and chiseled like a Greek statue, full of mouth and muscle. With the power of youth, came the absence of common sense. This was especially true with Jack.

“Yo, Celtic! That beam’s off by half an inch. You sure your ancient arms didn’t measure it in cubits?” he yelled, laughing at his own joke.

Celticfire, matching the other men here with a a vest open over a thick scarred hairy chest, kept working. No words, no actions, not even the rolling of his eyes. He just didn't care. Jack tried saying something else, but he tuned out immediately when he heard that nickname again. The nickname was a joke nobody liked, especially not him. But it stuck. Kind of like him. All grit and gravel. He hated it, but in the end, it was what ever.

Jack hopped down from the scaffolding, boots thudding in the dirt. He was clearly upset his bait wasn't being taken.

“You hear me, old man?”

“I hear you,” Celticfire said without looking. “I just don’t give a damn what you have to say".

Jack stepped up, close. “Maybe your ears are going, too. Maybe it’s time someone showed you how to retire.”

Celticfire looked up, and bore a calm expression that seemed carved from stone. His voice was just as cold....

“That right kid?”

When men stepped into the ring, a certain understanding that normal socially unusual (and sometimes batshit insane) mentalities were accepted here. You understood pain was weakness leaving the body, you understood bruises were badges of honor, broken bones were temporary inconveniences, blood came as easily as sweat, and you never half assed anything. Here boys became men. That's why CelticFire didn't question the man on the other side of the ring. His smaller (muscle) size didn't manner, his lack of experience didn't matter. He manned up and entered the ring, so no matter what, he earned some respect.

Now it was time to earn some more.

With the lights above the ring blazing hot, two ants stood below ready to dance the violence dance. Many of the men in the gym had stopped their workouts to watch the fight, enjoying the social experience of it all. The crowd swelled in dozens of voices, but all of it, every sound, every face, every emotion on display, blurred into a dull hum for Dante. They, and all of it, was just background noise. He stood in his corner, shoulders twitching with nervous energy, he tried to calm himself. Gloved fists tapping against each other like he was trying to coax the courage out of them, he still tried to calm himself. He was far to excited for this fight, far to nervous, far to everywhere.

“Keep your hands up!” his friend turned corner man barked, tugging at his mouth-guard. “He’s not here to dance with you.”

“I dunno?” Dante quipped, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “I brought my best two-step. Think he likes salsa?”

Across the ring stood CelticFire, or Celtic for short. He was a wall of muscle and menace. His skin, haired not smooth like Dante, was leathered with age and lined with ink. Previous battle scares danced around Gaelic knots coiled across his arms, chest and ribs, telling tales only fists could read. He didn’t bounce. He didn’t blink. He just waited, still and terrifying, like the moment before a wave crushes you. This was a man who enjoyed the fight, but did not let it control him.

The bell rang, the battle was joined.

Dante surged forward, light on his feet, ducking low, testing with a jab. Celticfire swatted it aside like it was an insult. Dante grinned, circling. “What do you call a boxer who makes pancakes?” he called out. Celticfire narrowed his eyes.

“A whisk-taker.”

The city was quiet in that eerie, just-past-midnight kind of way. It was just after midnight when the drunks were going home, but morning life hadn't started yet. It was the perfect time to have a rather personal meeting without being bothered with social niceties.

And so they did.

Down some piss filled, no name, no one cared about side alley, two men faced each other. No rules. No audience. No need for flare or show. Just years of bad blood and a final reckoning.

With shirts discarded, that time was now.
